Doodle A Day: Day 80 Frost Man

Well to start things off I’ve made a change in how I do my doodles.  I’ve been getting tired of doing my doodles on small pieces of note paper for a while now so I decided to go out and buy a small sketch pad so I’d have more room to draw.

So with more room to draw I figured I’d start things off with one of the biggest Robot Masters, Frost Man.  I’m still getting used to having the extra space so it might take me awhile to work out some of the kinks but I think Frost Man turned out alright.

This also came for me in the mail shortly after I finished my doodle.

So now I have a handy guide to help me finish up the rest of the Robot Master doodles.

Doodle A Day: Day 79 Iroh

I’ve spent the majority of my weekend re-watching Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix so I decided to do a quick doodle of my favorite character from the show, Iroh.  The tea-loving firebending master is never without some words of wisdom or a good laugh which is part of what makes him such a good character.  But when push comes to shove this goofy old man suddenly becomes a roaring dragon which have left many to learn, you don’t FUCK with Iroh.

Doodle A Day: Day 78 Sword Man

Giving a robot a sword seems like it would be a guaranteed recipe for success but when Capcom attempted to do so with Sword Man all we got was a guy who doesn’t have a torso.  While Sword Man isn’t the worst Robot Master in the world it’s just a bit disappointing tha this is the best they could come up with.

Doodle A Day: Day 77 Astro Man

Unfortunately Astro Man isn’t a cool grown up version of Astro Boy, but instead is a robot made out of a bunch of balls.  I’ve mentioned it before but I don’t care to much for the Robot Masters from Mega Man 8 and seeing Astro Man it’s not that hard to figure out why.

Doodle A Day: Day 76 Tengu Man

Tengu Man is the coolest Robot Master from Mega Man 8, but playing Mega Man 8 as a wee lad I had no idea what a tengu was and it would be years later before I actually found out.  It turns out that a tengu is a creature out of Japanese folklore that can either be a disruptive demon, or a protective spirit that are often depicted with a red face and a large long nose.

Doodle A Day: Day 75 Duo and a Mega Man 8 rant

It’s my 75th doodle, HUZZAH!  To celebrate here’s a rant about Mega Man 8!

The day I’ve been loathing since I’ve started doodling has finally arrived.  Today marks the beginning of Mega Man 8 and I despise Mega Man 8.  I’ve mentoned before that I’ve been playing through all the classic Mega Man games as I’ve been doing these doodles and Mega Man 8 is the only game I couldn’t finish. Not because it was to hard, but I just couldn’t stand paying it anymore.

Why do I hate Mega Man 8 so much?  The first and most obvious reason is because of the game’s sound design.  I’m no just talking about the famously horrible voice acting littered throughout the game but the game’s music as well.  The best part of any Mega Man game has always been the music but Mega Man 8 ruins that by filling Mega Man 8 with nothing but a bunch of generic rock and jazz tracks.

But sound design normally isn’t enough to make me despise a game, the level design in Mega Man 8 is also pretty horrible as well.  And it’s one thing to play through a bad level but when the visuals make you want to tear out your eyes it makes the whole experience a lot worse.  Not that the graphics are particularly bad just the colour pallets they used are so bright I can’t stand to look at them.

The only redeeming thing I can say about Mega Man 8 isn’t even about Mega Man 8, but rather Rockman 8 from Japan.  Both versions of the game open with the same animated intro, the US version has some generic jazz rock song playing during it that doesn’t really get you to excited for anything.

But the Japanese version has this catchy J-Pop intro that really gets you pumped up and saying “LET’S PLAY SOME FUCKING MEGA MAN!!!”  The opening also brings about a sense of limitless potential within the game that unfortunately is never reached.  But it’s nice to believe if only for a second your about to play something amazing.

That about ends my Mega Man 8 rant so I suppose I should say a few words about Duo.  Duo was introduced in Mega Man 8 as a main focal point for the game’s story, he’s from space and he has a big arm.  Other than that there isn’t much to say about Duo as he’s kind of a forgettable character not really showing up in any other classic entries of the series.

Doodle A Day: Day 74 Junk Man

April 24, 2012 1 comment

So I end my escapade through Mega Man 7 with Junk Man one of the saddest examples of a Robot Master. I’ve joked before that Wily wasn’t really thinking when making some Robot Masters but with Junk Man Wily wasn’t even trying.  He literally took a bunch of scrap metal and discarded robot parts and put them together to make Junk Man.  He doesn’t even hide the fact that Junk Man is made out of junk he goes and puts it in his name.  Poor Junk Man, but at least he’s environmentally friendly.
