Doodle A Day: Day 79 Iroh

April 29, 2012 2 comments

I’ve spent the majority of my weekend re-watching Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix so I decided to do a quick doodle of my favorite character from the show, Iroh.  The tea-loving firebending master is never without some words of wisdom or a good laugh which is part of what makes him such a good character.  But when push comes to shove this goofy old man suddenly becomes a roaring dragon which have left many to learn, you don’t FUCK with Iroh.

One Piece: Pirate Warriors sets sail for North America

Never have I thought that the news of a Dynasty Warriors game coming to North America would have me so happy, but it just goes to show if you put One Piece in anything I’m most likely to buy it.

It was announced today that One Piece: Pirate Warriors a Dynasty Warriors style game featuring the characters from the manga/anime One Piece will be coming to North America aiming for a November 2012 release.

No word on whether the game will be using English voice actors or not, but my hopes are that Namco Bandi just translates the menus and text and leaves in the Japanese voices and adds some subtitles. That way, the turn around for it to be released here will be a lot quicker.

Pirate Warriors is coming but it's unlikely that the gold One Piece PS3 will ever come to North America. But a guy can dream.

Ni no Kuni delayed, grown man cries

It was announced today that the Studio Ghibli/Level 5 joint; Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch will be facing a few delays in coming to North America, lengthening the time where I can finally cradle the game in my arms.

The game was originally set to come out sometime in winter of this year, but it was announced that Ni no Kuni is now aiming for as Q1 2013 release.  This is indeed saddening news as Ni no Kuni was one of the few games of 2012 that I was genuinely excited about.

The news of this delay has me seriously considering learning Japanese just so I can import the game, but by the time I can fluently understand Japanese 2013 will probably already be here. So until than all I can do is watch this trailer over and over again.

Doodle A Day: Day 38 Astro Boy

I felt like drawing Astro Boy today because I’ve been reading Pluto by Naoki Urasawa, a retelling of the Astro Boy story “The Strongest Robot on Earth.”  What I like about Pluto is how it takes something that is usually light and fun and puts it in a darker more serious setting.  It’s a great read that shouldn’t be missed by Astro Boy and manga fans alike.  Hell, even if you just like a well crafted story it’s worth checking out.

Part of what made Osuma Tezuka’s work so fascinating, was how he brought so much life to his characters through their eyes.  Part of the reason I just draw lines for eyes, is I feel that I lack the ability to do the same with the eyes I draw, so I just draw lines instead.  But for Astro Boy I thought just giving him line eyes would be an injustice to the character, so I attempted to give him real eyes instead.  I don’t think my eyes are a complete success, but at least I tried.

While I’m at it I’m gonna post one of my favorite Astro Boy related things, the Japanese opening to the 2003 Astro Boy cartoon.  What I love about this is how captures the feelings of wonder and imagination that I felt watching cartoons as a kid.  It’s something I wanted to share with you all and I hope you enjoy it.
