E3 2012 Day 2 Nintendo

I apologize for the wall of text but there really wasn’t any media out by the time I wrote this. So here’s a picture of Nintendo President Satoru Iwata holding some bananas.

So Nintendo’s big E3 press conference happened today and their big focus was showcasing the Wii U and what it can do.  So is the Wii U gonna revolutionize gaming?  Is it something that I’m gonna run out and buy day one?  From what I’ve seen the answer to both these questions is no.

The press conference started off really strong with Shigeru Miyamoto coming out revealing Pikmin 3 for the Wii U and giving a brief demonstration of it.  I’m happy that Pikmin 3 has finally been announced as I’ve been eagerly waiting for this game since Pikmin 2 came out in 2004.  It looks a lot like the Pikmin I know and love but this time there will be four character to take control of and they revealed one new Pikmin type a Rock Pikmin.

After showing off Pikmin 3 they took some time to talk about just what the Wii U can do but they didn’t give any kind of price point or exactly when the Wii U will be coming out. But just from the tablet along the Wii U looks like it’s going to be costly.

Other than Pikmin 3 Nintendo really didn’t offer anything for the Wii U that would make me run out and buy the damn thing.  They showed New Super Mario Bros. U which I honestly don’t care about, I wasn’t a fan of New Super Mario Bros Wii so I don’t see why I should be excited for this.

They also showed off a bunch of casual stuff like Wii Fit U, some singing game creatively called Sing, a GTA-type Lego game called Lego City all stuff I couldn’t care about even if you paid me.

Nintendo’s other “big” reveal was a Nintendo theme park game called Nintendo Land which just seems like another mini-game collection with a Nintendo themed coating.

They also showed off a a couple of 3rd party titles like Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition which gives Batman and Catwoman some new armored suits which can build up power for stronger attacks.  They showed off some of the Wii U funtionality but it all seems way to gimmicky to me, controlling a batarang with the Wii U tablet really isn’t something I’d call revolutionary.

They also showed a sizzle real of a bunch of 3rd part games coming to Wii U like Darksiders 2, Ninja Gaiden 3 and Mass effect 3 but in all honesty I don’t see why anyone would go out and by these games for Wii U if they have a 360, PS3 or PC.

The press conference was mainly about the Wii U and a separate conferences focusing on the 3DS will be happening sometime tomorrow.  But Nintendo did take some time to show 3, Mario themed 3DS games and they have me way more excited over anything they showed for the Wii U.

The first 3DS game they showed was New Super Mario Bros. 2 which is looking so much better than its Wii U counter part. Nintendo also gave the game a release date August 19.  The 2nd game was Paper Mario Sticker Star which will have a focus on collecting stickers you find throughout the world and using them in battle.  And last but not least we got to see Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, which will feature multiple mansions and a lot of different enemy types.  I was a big fan of the original Luigi’s Mansion so I’m glad to see it getting a second chance.  Both Paper Mario and Luigi’s Mansion are coming out sometime this holiday season.

So that was the bulk of what happened from today press conference and I have to say I’m very disappointed with what Nintendo showed.  From the get go the Wii U was something I had no real interest in playing, and Nintendo really failed to do anything to persuade me other wise.

But what about you? What do you think about Nintendo’s job at E3 so far and what do you think of the Wii U? Sign off in the comments and let me know.

E3 2012 Round Up and Impressions Day 1

So E3 began today and all of the big names except for Nintendo had there press conferences.  So with the final conference over I thought I’d give my thoughts on some of the stuff that caught my eye.

P.S. I put this together in a hurry so I apologize for any spelling or grammatical errors.

Don’t have a 360 so I didn’t watch the press confrecne but from what I hear it was nothing but Halo 4 and a bunch of Kinect stuff.  So if your into that kind of thing good for you!

Dead Space 3 was really the only thing that I was interested in during EA’s press conference and I don’t know how to feel about it.  While the demo and trailer that were shown look really good, Dead Space 3 looks like it’s going away from its survival horror roots in favor for a more action oriented co-op experience.  I hope this isn’t the case as the original Dead Space is one of my favorite games of this generation and I’d hate for the series to lose what made it so good to begin with.

Ubisoft actually had a really strong showing this year the highlight of course being Assassin’s Creed 3 which looks freaking amazing!!!  AC3 looks like what would happen if Assassin’s Creed and Red Dead Redemption made sweet sweet love and had a beautiful love child together.  Ubisoft also showed off some naval battles that you’ll get to take part of in the game and it’s looking like a really good addition to the AC formula (unlike the tower defense crap we got in Revelations).

Other notable things from Ubisoft are Rayman Legends the sequle to last year’s Rayman Origins which is looking like more of the same, but Rayman Origins was amazing so having more of that really isn’t a bad thing.

Ubisoft’s big reveal was their new IP called Watch_Dogs that has you taking control of some sort of super hacker who can hack into anything to manipulate the environment.  While I like the premis I wasn’t really floored by the demonstration that was given but the game looks like it has some serious potential behind it.

Sony started off big with revealing Heavy Rain creator Quantic Dream’s new game Beyond: 2 Souls.  Not a lot of details about what the game is actually about but it stars Ellen Paige and she seems to be able to communicate with some sort of ghost.  Beyond is looking really good and it’s a game I’m very eager to learn more about.

Sony also did some stuff with Playstaion All-Stars Battle Royale (worst name ever) announcing a Vita version of the game as well as giving a demonstration of it.  My feelings about this game are a bit mixed, I love the idea of a Sony Smash Bros. but I’d rather have a straight up copy of the formula that makes Super Smash Bros. so great rather than this building up your super meter nonsense.  2 new characters were also revealed: Uncharted’s Nathan Drake, and Bioshock’s Bid Daddy.  The inclusion of Nathan Drake is a no-brainer but Big Daddy is a pleasent surprise.

Sony also showed the first single player footage of God of War Ascension which is looking like more God of War.  The demo was good but it didn’t blow me away like God of War 3’s E3 demo did.

And last but not least we finally got to see the first real gameplay footage for the Last of Us, and in true Naughty Dog fashion the game looks absolutely phenomenal.  I really like how the game has an emphasis on stealth as opposed to Uncharted’s run and gun gameplay.

So far the first day of E3 has been pretty good and unless Nintendo just blows it out of the park tomorrow I think Sony is going home as this year’s winner.

One Piece: Pirate Warriors sets sail for North America

Never have I thought that the news of a Dynasty Warriors game coming to North America would have me so happy, but it just goes to show if you put One Piece in anything I’m most likely to buy it.

It was announced today that One Piece: Pirate Warriors a Dynasty Warriors style game featuring the characters from the manga/anime One Piece will be coming to North America aiming for a November 2012 release.

No word on whether the game will be using English voice actors or not, but my hopes are that Namco Bandi just translates the menus and text and leaves in the Japanese voices and adds some subtitles. That way, the turn around for it to be released here will be a lot quicker.

Pirate Warriors is coming but it's unlikely that the gold One Piece PS3 will ever come to North America. But a guy can dream.

Ni no Kuni delayed, grown man cries

April 11, 2012 4 comments

It was announced today that the Studio Ghibli/Level 5 joint; Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch will be facing a few delays in coming to North America, lengthening the time where I can finally cradle the game in my arms.

The game was originally set to come out sometime in winter of this year, but it was announced that Ni no Kuni is now aiming for as Q1 2013 release.  This is indeed saddening news as Ni no Kuni was one of the few games of 2012 that I was genuinely excited about.

The news of this delay has me seriously considering learning Japanese just so I can import the game, but by the time I can fluently understand Japanese 2013 will probably already be here. So until than all I can do is watch this trailer over and over again.

Capcom Captivate Trailer Gallery

Capcom’s annual Captivate event happened recently and with that a bunch of new trailers have come out of it. With me being a big Capcom fan I decided to share some of them and give a bit of commentary to go with it.

Devil May Cry

Revelations are abound in the newest DmC trailer, and the game is quickly becoming one of my more highly antciepated games of the year.  First we learn the Dante likes to sleep in the nude, and that Bill O’ Riley disapproves of Dante’s antics. The trailer also shows some more of the game’s combat which is looking tight and we see that Dante still maintains his jack-ass sense of humor.  All in all Ninja Theory looks like they’re doing a great job with the DmC reboot despite what haters might say.

Resident Evil 6

I’m not gonna lie. I have a big man crush on Leon S. Kennedy and that’s part of the reason I’m so excited for Resident Evil 6.  The newest trailer does a good job of revealing more about the game’s story and builds a lot of tension and suspense ending in a Leon vs. Chris confrentation. But for as much as the trailer does a good job at building tension and suspense as soon as the logo comes up I can’t take the game seriously anymore.

Once you see it, you can never unsee it!

Lost Planet 3

Lost Planet is a franchise that I’m surprised is still around.  I played the first one and thought it was a big bowl of MEH, and when the 2nd one came out I ignored it altogether.  But the reveal trailer for Lost Planet 3 has me a bit intrigued.  Even though it shows no gameplay, I’m a big sucker for a giant robot fighting a giant ice crab.
